Stuff it. Let's go sailing anyway!

Rob and Karen Oberg are an Australian couple from Ipswich in Queensland who were over the 9 to 5 world and intent on pursuing their dreams of exploring the world under sail. Despite limited sailing experience they set about preparing for a life at sea. This involved completing a raft of RYA courses and working hard towards laying the financial base to buy a yacht and embark on their great adventure. Now empty nesters, they sold their large family home, bought and renovated three houses with plans of renting two to provide some income and selling the third to provide the money to buy the yacht of their dreams. Then in a cruel blow, just as the 'For Sale' sign went up, the tentacles of the Global Financial Crisis combined with record natural disasters in Queensland to stall the real estate market they were relying on to fund their dream. This is the story of how they refused to let that dream die. Rather than give up, they decided ‘Stuff it. Let’s go sailing anyway!’

They looked for another way to kick start their new life and, rather than buying a boat, they decided to sail as crew with other cruisers. It all began in June 2011, sailing around the north of Australia through Indonesia to Bali on a Benneteau sloop where they joined a Formosa ketch to Borneo and on to Malaysia before racing in the King’s Cup Regatta in Thailand on yet another boat.

Stuff it. Let's go sailing anyway! is the story of how they did it, the places they travelled, the people they met, some wonderful some not so and their experiences as crew, both good and bad. The 190 page, hardcover book is packed with Rob's photographs, wonderful water colour illustrations by Karen, maps and the very entertaining tale of their introduction to the cruising life. Not only a great read, the book is also a very valuable source of information for anyone following in their footsteps cruising the Indonesian Islands. This book is $75.00AUS plus Postage and Handling.

Stuff it. Let's go sailing anyway.

Our original hardcover coffee table book, Stuff it. Let's go sailing anyway, is now also available as an e-book. It chronicles how we made the transition from land lubbers to full time cruisers at a time when the Global Financial Crisis combined with natural disasters to prevent us from buying a boat. Rather than delay our dream we went crewing for other people sailing from Australia through Indonesia and Malaysia to Thailand.

I find the best way of doing meals on passage is to have pre-cooked them beforehand and freeze the whole lot - that way you just take one out during the day to let it thaw , heat up and serve when needed - you want to minimise time in the galley especially if the seas are lumpy. You never quite know what weather you are going to get until you are out there. Passages are tiresome and if you need to prepare food for the hungry crew you can really find it laborious. So make life easy for you ðŸ˜Š

We love to use our ShuttleChef for Passage Food making. Not only is the meal contained in one pot, but it's not requiring extended power use. I’m in the galley supervising the cook and at any time of the day or night crew can help themselves to a hot meal.

You’ll find heaps of other great recipes and passage planning tips including a fully downloadable and editable provisioning list in Our Galleys EBook “All you need to know about Provisioning”.
